View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 8 Saint Marks Place by Carter Horsley

This handsome, 8-story building at Eight St. Marks Place at Third Avenue in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn was designed and built by Barrett Design & Development, which is headed by Alex Barrett, in 2017.

It has 14 condominium apartments and 561 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.

The site was purchased in 2015 from Avery Hall Investments for $5.65 million.

Bottom Line

From a distance, this mid-rise building looks a bit like a rather fearsome bunker whose deeply inset, tall, single-pane windows probably are hiding a galleon’s heavy cannons.  Up close, however, the façade is very elegant and sophisticated with very thin, elongated bricks whose tight stacking reinforces the marching rhythm of the closely ribbed vertical granite piers beneath the building’s entrance marquee.

Description

The top two floors are partially setback and either side of a windowless, full-height section of the façade.

The building has a very attractive ground floor with an entrance marquee over the glass doors and a broad section of thin, vertically ribbed granite piers that are extremely attractive.  The ground floor façade also has a couple of thin indentations that are quite discrete and handsome.

The façade has staggered fenestration.

Groundswell, a Brooklyn-based non-profit organization will produce a mural for the St. Mark’s Place façade.

Amenities

The building has a roof deck, bicycle storage, personal storage and a virtual doorman.

Apartments

The apartments have 6-inch red-oak plank floors, natural stone countertops, white-oak kitchen cabinetry and private elevator access.  They also have Bosch washers and dryers.

Penthouse B is a 1,682-square-foot, two-bedroom unit with two terraces with 190 square feet of external space and a 26-foot-wide living room with an open kitchen with an island and a 10-foot-long dining room and a 10-foot-long study.

Unit A on the second, fourth and sixth floors is a 1,276-square-foot, three-bedroom unit with a 28-foot-long living room with an open kitchen and an island.

Unit A on the first floor is a 1,680-square-foot, one-bedroom duplex unit with a 30-foot-long living room and open kitchen with an island and a 28-foot-wide terrace on the upper level and a 25-foot-wide recreation room with a sunken garden on the lower level.

Unit B on the third and fifth floors is a 1,248-square foot, three-bedroom unit with a 25-foot-long living room and open kitchen with an island.
