Broadway Corridor Apartments

Broadway Corridor, New York City

As the heart of the Upper West Side, the Broadway Corridor is a bustling residential neighborhood teeming with shops, restaurants, supermarkets and cultural institutions. The area stretches from 70th Street to 110th Street, running from Columbus Avenue to Broadway.

With a mix of ages, cultures and socio-economic groups, Broadway Corridor offers the quintessential New York experience -- a cornucopia of tastes and flavors encompassing everything from classic smoked fish and gourmet specialty foods at Zabar's to cheap hotdogs at Gray's Papaya.

Though often overshadowed by nearby Central Park West, the Broadway Corridor boasts a considerable number of prestigious, pre-war apartment buildings, including Ansonia Court at 2109 Broadway, The Apthrop and The Belnord, full-block courtyard buildings. Notable post-war buildings include Park Belvedere at 101 79th Street and The Bromley at 225 West 83rd Street.

Long a bastion for artists, musicians, writers and intellectuals, the neighborhood was once home to luminaries, including composer Irving Berlin, actress Gloria Swanson, jazz musician Miles Davis, lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, singer Billie Holiday and writer J.D. Salinger, among others.

In this same vein, the Broadway Corridor offers much in the way of arts and culture. Popular venues include the Beacon Theater at 2123 Broadway and Symphony Space at 2537 Broadway.

Given the great diversity of the neighborhood, the Broadway Corridor features many magnificent houses of worship -- from historic synagogues such as Congregation Shaare Zedek to the First Baptist Church of the City of New York, built in 1891 at the intersection of Broadway and 79th Street.

The neighborhood is home to some of the city's oldest and most prestigious private, parochial and religious schools such as Trinity School, founded in 1709, as well as highly respected public schools.

Broadway serves as the main public transportation thoroughfare for the Upper West Side, with 1 trains stopping at 72nd, 79th, 86th, 96th, 103rd and 110th streets and express service via 2 and 3 at 72nd and 96th Streets. Buses run frequently along Broadway and also provide crosstown bus service on major streets.
