between East 164th Street & East 165th Street View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 1020 Grand Concourse by Carter Horsley

This impressive, large, 23-story, white-brick building at 1020 Grand Concourse between 164th and 165th streets is one of the major apartment buildings in the Bronx. It was erected in 1963 and has 453 co-operative apartments.

It was designed by Philip Birnbaum, who would design many apartment towers in Manhattan.

It is quite close to the very striking Bronx Museum of the Arts, designed by Arquitectonica, and Yankee Stadium.  It is also close to 900 Grand Concourse which was designed in 1922 as the Concourse Plaza Hotel designed by Maynicke & Franke that was visited by many Presidents before being converted to a welfare hotel in the 1960s and a federal subsidized senior citizens’ residence in 1982.

It was formerly known as Executive Towers and its original brochure proclaimed it to be “the first luxury skyscraper in the Bronx” and as having a large fountain in its lobby.

It is close to subways at 167th Street.
