Carter Horsley
Review of 422 West 20th Street by Carter Horsley

This very attractive, mid-block building at 422 West 20th Street is across the street from the General Theological Seminary that occupies the full block between Ninth and Tenth Avenues and 20th and 21st streets in Chelsea.

This building, a former dormitory for married students at the seminary, is a five-story building that was erected in 1895 and designed by Neville & Bagge.

The building has been developed by The Brodsky Organization, which also developed the Chelsea Enclave at 177 Ninth Avenue.

Alan Wanzenberg Architects designed the 37-unit condominium conversion in 2012.

Bottom Line

An extremely handsome building whose residents have access to the seminary’s famous Close, or garden, across the street, it has a prime Chelsea location convenient to transportation, restaurants, art galleries and the High Line Park.

Description

The handsome, symmetrical building has arched windows on the fourth floor and a large cornice with bandcourses above the first and fourth floors and three, 6-step-up entrances beneath attractive fire-escapes that were removed in the conversion. The first and top floors are rusticated.

Amenities

The building has a doorman, a live-in superintendent, a gym, community recreation facilities, storage space, a bicycle room, an elevator and a laundry.

Apartments

Apartments have central air-conditioning, 2.5-inch wide solid oak plant flooring, new thermopane windows, ceiling heights that range from 8 to 10-and-a-half feet, Bosch washers and dryers, Shaker-style kitchen cabinetry, honed Basaltina stone countertops and pale grey backsplashes, Liebherr stainless steel refrigerators and Bosch stainless steel gas cooktops and wall ovens and dishwashers..

Residence C on the 2nd floor is a one-broom with a very long entry gallery that leads past an open, windowed kitchen to a 17-foot-long living room.

Residence H on the third floor has a long entry hall that leads past an enclosed, windowed kitchen and two bedrooms to a 24-foot-wide living room at the rear of the building.
