800 Sixth Avenue: Review and Ratings

between West 27th Street & West 28th Street View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 800 Sixth Avenue by Carter Horsley

This attractive, 36-story rental apartment building at 800 Avenue of the Americas on the east side of the avenue between 27th and 28th Streets and was originally known as the Aston and is now called Archstone Chelsea.

It has 266 apartments and many curved bay windows and corner windows in the tower that rises above a five-story base.

It was developed in 2004 by Matthew G. Adell, who with his father, Leonard Adell, waged a long campaign to have the Flower District rezoned for residential uses.

According to an article by Edwin McDowell in the October 31, 2003 edition of The New York Times, Leonard Adell began assembling three sites in the "corridor" in the 1970s and with the Witkoff Group built the Capitol at Chelsea, a rental apartment building, in 2001.  They also bought the land where the Chelsea Tower stands and sold it as well as this building.  This building was sold in 2004 for about $195 million.

Costas Kondylis & Partners designed this and the Capitol at Chelsea.

It is one of several high-rise apartment buildings that radically transformed the city's former "Flower District" that played host to wholesale florists for decades in the area just to the north of the Ladies' Mile Historic District.

These buildings are close to the popular NoMad area and the Flatiron District.
