This handsome, 16-story, apartment building on the northeast corner of Ninth Avenue at 365 West 20th Street is known as Chelsea Court Tower.    It was built in 1928 and was designed by C. P. H.  Gilbert, who built many major Manhattan mansions including the Jewish Museum on Fifth Avenue and 92nd Street, the Convent of the Sacred Heart School on Fifth Avenue and 91st Street, Cartier’s on Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street, and the Polish Consulate General on Madison Avenue at 37th Street.    This building has 74 co-operative apartments. Amenities include a part-time doorman (4 p.m.-midnight), live-in superintendent, shared landscaped roof deck, central laundry room, on-site storage and bicycle room. The building is conveniently located close to the High Line, Chelsea Market, top restaurants and several forms of transportation. Pied-a-terre, gifting and co-purchasing permitted on a case-by-case basis.

Bottom Line

Across Ninth Avenue from the General Theological Seminary and on a very attractive, tree-lined side-street in Chelsea, this very handsome building is one of the better, pre-war apartment buildings in Chelsea.

Description

The building, which is also known as 164-168 Ninth Avenue, has a two-story limestone base and a buff-brick façade with a center lightwell on the avenue above the first floor and quoins at its corners. Many of the top floor windows have handsome broken pediments.  

The building’s entrance is on the side-street where its name is engraved above the entrance framed by small light sconces. 

The building has some protruding window air-conditioners and a bandcourse above the 14th floor.  Its roofline is divided by balustrades.

The building has a part-time doorman, a roof deck, a live-in superintendent, a laundry and bicycle room and basement storage.

Apartments

Apartment 15C is a two-bedroom unit with a 15-foot-long living/dining room with an open kitchen and a bay window. 

Apartment 3B is a one-bedroom unit with a small angled entry foyer that opens into a 16-foot-long living room next to a 9-foot-long dining area and a 12-foot-long open kitchen. 

Apartment 17A is a one-bedroom unit with a large living room with a wood-burning fireplace and a wrap-around terrace.
