Chelsea Mews, 148 West 23rd Street: Review and Ratings

Carter Horsley
Review of 148 West 23rd Street by Carter Horsley

This very handsome building was erected in 1920 when the Ladies' Mile of famous department stores was still flourishing on Sixth Avenue just to the south and the Madison Square Park area was one of the city's prime business locations. Straddling the Flatiron and Chelsea districts, two of the city's most vibrant, this 12-story building was converted to 114 cooperative apartments in 1985. The building has a very detailed and attractive roofline and a boldly pronounced fenestration pattern that reflects the interior's high ceilings. West 23rd Street declined somewhat in the Depression and after World War II as the city's major department stores moved to midtown, but the renaissance of Chelsea in the 1990's has revived its charm and the area is now one of the most buoyant because of its excellent public transportation and many spectacular and popular restaurants and stores.
