Review of 525 West 27th Street by Carter Horsley

This apartment complex consists of two differently massed and styled 11-story buildings at 527 West 27th Street near the High Line in Chelsea was scheduled for completion in 2016.

The project is known as Jardim and has 36 condominium apartments.

The developer is Centaur Properties and Greyscale Development Group.

Isay Weinfeld is the architect. Future Green Studios is the landscape architect.

It is just west of a 39-unit single-building project of a much more curvaceous but similar height designed by Zaha Hadid, who died in 2016.

Bottom Line

Two dissimilar buildings in a pleasant and conservative project in Chelsea that is the neighbor to the flamboyant and curvaceous only New York project by Zaha Hadid, the stararchitect who died in 2016.

Description

This is a Laurel and Hardy duo of slim and large buildings with very different personalities on a site adjacent to a curvy and very glassy project of the same height by Zaha Hadid, the stararchitect who died in 2016.

The building on 27th Street has a broad one-story light-colored base that includes a recessed entrance and a long driveway with a tower setback at the 9th floor with light-colored balconies at the east end and alternating fenestration width.  The rear of the tower and the top two floors are face with brown brick.

There is a large and lushly landscaped courtyard between the two buildings.  The building on 28th street is considerably broader than the southern tower and its south concrete façade has a handsome and irregular fenestration grid with some recessed balconies.

The roofs of both towers are landscaped.

The driveway starts with a rectangular opening 27th Street that become an arch with its east side illuminated by an irregular pattern of horizontal lights.

Amenities

The building has a doorman, a children’s playroom, a garage, a garden, a bicycle room and a fitness center with a swimming pool with skylights.
