Review of 514 West 24th Street by Carter Horsley

The Fitzroy is a stunning, deep-green, terracotta-clad, mid-rise, mid-block residential condominium at 514 West 24th Street in Chelsea.

It was developed by JDS Development Group and Largo Investments and scheduled for completion in 2016.  JDS recently made condominium conversions of the handsome Walker and Stella buildings on the West Side that were designed in Art Deco-style by Ralph Walker.

This new building has 14 apartments.

Roman & Williams, which is headed by Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer who were married when they were film editors in Hollywood, was the architect and the IBI Group-Gruzen Samton is the architect of record.

The building is named after a British Lieutenant General named Charles Fitzroy who lived in Greenwich Village in the 18th Century and whose “military success brought forth naming a highway in his honor,” according to the building’s website.  “Before the Manhattan grid,” it continued, “the Fitzroy Road ran through current day from West 14th Street through present Eighth Avenue, to 40th Street and Ninth Avenue.”
