168 Duane Street: Review and Ratings

between Hudson Street & Greenwich Street View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 168 Duane Street by Carter Horsley

Designed in 1886 by Stephen Decatur Hatch in a Northern Renaissance Revival/Queen Anne style, this charming five-story building contains 10 condominium apartments.

It was converted in 1987 by Meile Rockefeller, a great-granddaughter of John D. Rockefeller Jr., and the conversion was designed by John T. Fifield.

The building overlooks Duane Park and is across the park from 165 Duane Street, a larger building designed by Hatch.

Bottom Line

A mid-block charmer across from the small but very attractive Duane Park in a prime TriBeCa location, close to many restaurants, the wonderful  Washington Market Park and a subway station.

Description

This small Flemish-style building has two oculi windows on its top floor and some arched windows and only 10 apartments.

Apartments

Apartments have 12-foot-high ceilings and most have large windows overlooking Duane Park.

History

Before its residential conversion in the 1980s, it housed a butter and eggs wholesaler.
