Bayard House, 203 East 72nd Street: Review and Ratings

between Third Avenue & Second Avenue View Full Building Profile

Review of 203 East 72nd Street by Carter Horsley

Many New Yorkers would like to live in Georgian-style low-rise building, but have to settle for a high-rise apartment, but residents here have the best of both such "worlds."

Bayard House consists of a very attractive, red-brick Georgian-style building on 72nd Street and a 27-story, beige-brick tower on the southeast corner of Third Avenue and 73rd Street.

The entrance to the tower is through the low-rise building on 72nd Street that leads into a very large and handsome lobby and a long-glass enclosed tunnel flanked by very lush gardens that leads to the tower's elevators. The elegant ambiance of this entrance is enhanced by the fact that the adjacent building on the corner at 72nd Street and Third Avenue is an even handsomer, Georgian-style, low-rise building.

For those first entering this building, which has 115 apartments, the entrance is a marvelous surprise, one of the best in the city.

By having the building's entrance on 72nd Street, the building, which was erected in 1966 and converted to a cooperative in 1979, has been able to create a very large retail space on Third Avenue on a raised, large plaza for a large restaurant.

The residential entrance in the four-story 72nd Street building has automatic doors and a doorman and sidewalk landscaping. The apartment tower has many bay windows, a garage and part of its south façade has perforated openings. It also has a roof deck and a gym.

This is a prime location in the heart of the Upper East Side. There are many good restaurants and excellent shopping in the vicinity and it is not far from the fashionable boutiques of Madison Avenue.

There is good cross-town bus service on 72nd Street, but the nearest subways are at 67th and 77th Streets and Lexington Avenue.
