Manhattan Contracts: 50 West 66th Street leads again; David Byrne's former townhouse finds a buyer

For the second time in autumn 2023, and the fifth time in all of 2023 (h/t Olshan Realty's luxury market report), an apartment at the forthcoming 50 West 66th Street had Manhattan's top contract. Residence #42NS, a 6,942-square-foot combination unit, has five bedrooms, five full baths, one powder room, two loggias overlooking Central Park, and an asking price of $45,750,000. Details were not available about the buyer.
Further downtown, 50 West 12th Street had the top townhouse contract and fourth-highest asking price overall at $15,500,000. The listing for the Anglo-Italianate townhouse touts the fact that it was once the home of Talking Heads musician David Byrne (whose Broadway musical Here Lies Love will close later this month), but its most exciting feature took shape after he sold it to its current owner: Artist Melinda Hackett commissioned fellow artists to build a backyard treehouse for her daughters. The treehouse attracted some controversy owing to the townhouse's address within the Greenwich Village Historic District, but was ultimately allowed to stay and included in the sale of the townhouse. Information on the buyer was not available.
