Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley

Carter's Review

This very handsome, 12-story building was erected as the Stratford House Apartments in 1903 and designed by Neville & Bagge, prolific residential building architects from the 1890s to the 1920s.

The firm s best known buildings are the Cornwall at 255 West 90th Street, the former Duncan Hall/Parnassus Club/Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory at 612 West 115th Street, El Nido at 116th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue and 425, 490, 590 and 789 West End Avenue.

The building has 80 cooperative apartments, a part-time doorman and a four-step-up entrance.

It has a two-story, rusticated limestone base, a balustraded balcony on the third floor, a broad bracketed bandcourse on the 11th floor and a cornice and many bay windows.

The building, which has quoins and protruding air-conditioners, has no garage and no roof deck.

It is convenient to public transportation and is very close to the Empire State Building and there are several restaurants on this block.
