Review of 166 East 34th Street by Carter Horsley

This 21-story rental apartment building was erected in 1974 by the Zucker Organization, which has also built several other projects in this area.

The building has a doorman and some fireplaces and 11 apartments per floor. While its slab form, which parallels Third Avenue, is quite plain, its north and south façades have projecting bays that add some visual interest.

The building has a location that is very convenient to both the Midtown and Midtown South business districts and is not too far from the trendy Flatiron District. It has good public transportation and neighborhood shopping.

The building was designed by Philip Birnbaum & Associates.

Several upper floor apartments have wood-burning fireplaces.

In 1999, the building was renovated and modernized and kitchens now have blond maple cabinetry with granite countertops and ceramic tile flooring.

Apartments now have thermopane windows and a new security system as well as an attended garage, valet service and a 24-hour doorman.

The building is known as Murray Hill Manor.
