Riverwalk Place, 455 Main Street: Review and Ratings

between W Road & West Main Street View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 455 Main Street by Carter Horsley

This 16-story, 18-sided, residential building at 455 Main Street on Roosevelt Island was erected in 2004 and has 230 condominium apartments.

It was developed by the Related Companies and designed by SLCE architects.

It is part of the Southtown section of Roosevelt Island and is close to the tram station that connects the island aerially to Manhattan and one of the great towers of the wonderful Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge.

Bottom Line

An unexciting addition to the lackluster skyline of Roosevelt Island, this bulky, orange-and-beige building with one large, angled setback on its east side, has spectacular vistas of the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the red trams, and the wonderful finials and girders of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge on its west side.

Description

This building has no gargoyles, no balconies, no spires, no finials and no decoration, but it does have two colors, orange and beige, and an angled mid-rise wing on its east side.

It is not without some frills such as a roof deck, a gym and a bicycle room, but its proximity to the very colorful and alluring red aerial tram to Manhattan in the lee of the great Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge coupled with its western vistas of the Upper West Side skyline almost make up for its uninspired and drab architecture.

Amenities

The building has a full-time doorman, a gym, a bicycle room, a laundry, a live-in superintendent, and a roof deck.
