Review of 2500 Johnson Avenue by Carter Horsley

This impressive 20-story slab apartment tower at 2500 Johnson Avenue in the Spuyten Duyvil section of The Bronx was erected in 1967 and is known as the Winston Churchill.  It has 339 co-operative apartments.

It was erected by Starrett Brothers & Eken.

A May 11, 1966 article at nytimes.com noted that “a V-shaped apartment building rising in the Riverdale area of the Bronx has been named the Winston Churchill with the authorization of the late statesman’s widow, Lady Clementine Spencer-Churchill.”

“Briton H. Richardson, president of the building concern of Starrett Brothers & Eken, Inc., said permission to use Sir Winston’s name had been sought because of the shape of the 21-story structure,” the article continued, adding that “the request was granted by letter.”

Bottom Line

A slightly bent high-rise apartment building on a Spuyten Duyvil hill in Riversdale that has quite spacious layouts and many balconies.

Description

The beige-brick building is actually Y-shaped with a short leg rather than V-shaped and the V configuration is rather flat.

The building has a very large, two-level entrance marquee and there are several steps down from the sidewalk before crossing the driveway just outside the white marble entrance surround beneath the lower marquee.

The building has discrete air-conditioners and extensive sidewalk landscaping and is near a few other high-rise apartment buildings.

The building has a large indoor swimming pool with locker rooms and saunas, an exercise room, ping pong and community room, a children’s playroom and outdoor playground, a 24-hour doorman and a garage.
