Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley
Dec 23, 2011
67 CITYREALTY RATING

Carter's Review

The heavily patterned façades of this 6-story rental apartment building at 229 North 8th Street in Williamsburg suggest a bold dimensionality to an otherwise a simple box shape.

The project, which was designed by Karl Fischer, began as a condominium but it switched to a rental in 2009.

The façades above the second floor combine gray-brick vertical "piers" that are slightly protruded with white brick masonry with slightly recessed windows.

Delicate columns of Juliet balconies sparsely dot this upper façade.

The first two floors windows slightly recessed behind many more gray-brick vertical piers with no white brick masonry but the first floor substitutes glass blocks for most of the window spaces.

The overall effect is further "crowded" by the placement of discrete window air-conditioners, some in the lower right and some in the lower left of the multi-paned windows.

The strong verticality of the dark-colored "piers" seem like many ribbons wrapping the building most securely but anchored by their multiplicity at the base.

The 54-unit building, which was developed by Isaac Schwartz, is also known as 63 Roebling Street.

It is close to Bedford L subway station and has a roofdeck, a garage, a fitness center and a double-height lobby.
