Review of 467 Keap Street by Carter Horsley

This rather startling mid-rise apartment tower at 467 Keap Street in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn opened in 2012 and was designed by Gilman Architects for Sun Sun.

It has 29 apartments.

The 10-story building is notable or its inwardly bent façades joined by a central glass section.

The building is close to the Metropolitan-Lorimer subway station and nearby shopping.

Gilman Architects also designed the Murano apartment tower in Queens.

Bottom Line

Locked in a belly-to-belly embrace with itself, this handsome mid-rise tower is distinguished not only by its bent-inward profile but also by its large, multi-pane windows.

Description

The building’s a-kilter stance is quite balanced and not disconcerting, quite like a subtle sway by Fred Astaire with a lilting Ginger Rogers.

Its base flares outward a bit but from most angles the building appears properly rectilinear and straight-up.

Many of its large corner windows have wrap-around balconies that firmly grasp the air about the free-standing, gray metal-clad tower whose narrow center glass section is pinched at its “waist.”

The building is a precursor to a similar but larger and considerably taller project planned by JDS Development and SHoP Architects for two towers between 35th and 36th Streets at the FDR Drive that are somewhat bent and joined by a multi-story skybridge at the most “pinched” point between the towers.

Amenities

The building has a doorman, central air-conditioning and available parking. Pets are allowed.
