Review of 390 Wythe Avenue by Carter Horsley

The Wythe Confectionery is a former, turn-of-the-century, 6-story former candy factory at 390 Wythe Avenue at the corner of South 4th Street in Williamsburg.

It was converted by Caro Enterprises Inc, of which Christian Pompa is a principal, to 69 rental apartments in 2010 when two floors were added and setback.

Perkins Eastman was the architectural firm for the conversion.  Its other projects in the city include 34 Berry Street in Williamsburg, and the Centria at 18 West 48th Street, 15 union Square West, 650 Avenue of the Americas, 303 East 33rd Street and Jade at 16 West 19th Street.

Bottom Line

This handsome building is close to the Williamsburg Bridge and the East River and has some exposed brick walls and wood ceilings.  It is two-tenths of a mile from the South 8th Street Ferry landing.

Description

The building is distinguished for its rounded corners, large arched windows on the ground floor and small arched window openings on the sixth floor.

The 2010 conversion added a roof deck, residents’ lounge and some penthouse units.

The building is also distinguished by its very attractive façade tie-backs.

According to the building’s website, “the pine framed brick building boats architectural features like the brick barrel hinge corner, a corbelled brick cornice arched windows, massively scaled ground floor openings, and decorative brickwork punctuated with unique decorative iron ties across the façade.

Cast iron straps and capitals have been brought back to life, and the original heavy-timbered plank flooring restored and retained as ceilings framed and supported by their original pine beams, all melded with modern fixtures and finished throughout. All of the building’s native materials, including extra timbers and slate flooring that were not used during the restoration have been reclaimed for reuse in the public and shared spaces of the buildings.

Amenities

The building has a roof deck, a part-time attendant, a gym, bicycle storage, a central laundry room and a garage.
