at The Northwest corner of York Avenue View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 455 East 86th Street by Carter Horsley

The Channel Club tower at 455 East 86th Street on the northwest corner at 86th Street is a slender, dark brown monolith set back in a landscaped and raised corner plaza.

The 39-story building was designed in 1987 by Wechsler-Grasso-Menziuso. A recent lobby renovation was designed by Michael Zenreich.

David Edelstein and Harvey and Edward Simpson were the developers.

The building, which is also known as 1633 York Avenue, has 164 condominium apartments.

Bottom Line

One long block away from Carl Schurz Park, this building has excellent bus transportation and is not far from good supermarkets and excellent private girls’ schools.

Description

The tower is distinguished by its reddish-purple brick façades and rather complex massing. About twenty years after it was built, a small building extension was added on the west side of its plaza that is across from a diner and a bagel shop.

Amenities

The building has a landscaped plaza, a live-in superintendent, a doorman, a children’s playground, a health club and a pool. It is also pet friendly.
