50 East 79th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This quite attractive, 21-story building has one of the choicest locations on the Upper East Side, close to many major museums and world-famous boutiques and art galleries. The red-brick building, which has a polished, gray granite base and white window sash, has considerable light and air and many good views because the block across Madison Avenue consists of distinguished, low-rise townhouses. Madison Avenue, of course, is a stroller's delight and its ambiance continues to improve and move northward as Missoni decided to relocate up the avenue to 78th Street in 1998, a sign that this neighborhood will become even more fashionable. One of the city's finest public schools, PS 6, is two blocks to the north on the avenue and one of the city's best jukeboxes is at the Madison Pub, which has excellent, inexpensive burgers between 79th and 80th Streets. There is excellent bus service here and the Lexington Avenue subway has a stop at 77th Street on the same block as Lenox Hill Hospital. This 95-unit building was erected in 1958 and converted to a cooperative in 1960. Many of the apartments facing Madison Avenue, which can have considerable traffic during the day, have views of Central Park and the top of the building has several angled terraces.
