Tower 53 - 159 West 53rd Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

53rd Street is widely considered one of the city's most impressive sidestreets because it is the site of such major landmarks as the Citicorp Center, the Seagram Building, the Museum of Modern Art, the CBS Building and the New York Hilton Hotel, some of the city's most famous landmarks.

When this mixed-use building was erected in 1968, this stretch of Seventh Avenue was not terribly attractive and rather run-down.

In recent years, however, much has changed. The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States erected its very impressive and art-filled Equitable Center at 52nd Street and a major and handsome new office building and annex to the Hilton Hotel was built just to the east of this building. Also, the remarkable renaissance of Times Square in the 1990's has revitalized the entire west Midtown area that has now become one of the most exciting in the city.

This 37-story, white-brick building contains 213 apartments over a 10-story office base. It was converted to a condominium in 1983. Many of the apartments have balconies that originally had yellow glass railings, which were changed in 2006 to a much more attractive clear glass. At the same time, all the windows were replaced. The balconies are staggered on the facade to provide them with more light and air, an intelligent design.

The building has a plaza along Seventh Avenue that is not landscaped and it is across 53rd Street from the Sheraton Center Hotel, one of the city's major convention hotels that has been nicely remodeled.
