61 East 86th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This very handsome, neoclassical mid-rise, midblock apartment house was built in 1910 and converted to a cooperative in 1985.

The 7-story structure has 41 apartments.

The building has a fine location that is very convenient to public transportation, neighborhood shopping, several major museums, several private schools and several religious institutions.

The building has a two-story, rusticated limestone base, limestone quoins, a light-yellow-brick facade and some attractive and pronounced window pediments and balustraded balconies on its second story, one of which is directly above its entrance.

The apartment house has a canopied, step-up entrance that leads to a very attractive, large and well-lit lobby with a doorman. There is a dry moat surrounded by raised planters filled with hedges. The entrance has globular light stanchions.

The building has consistent fenestration and a small cornice, and permits protruding air-conditioners. It has an exposed rooftop watertank enclosure, but it is not highly visible from the street.
