When most people come across the term "butler's pantry" in a real estate listing, they tend to picture a scene out of Downton Abbey with a uniformed butler polishing the family silver away from the main entertaining areas. That is not far off the mark - such dedicated spaces were used in large homes to store such items as the aforementioned silver, fine china and crystal, and other heirlooms. They were often located just off the kitchen or formal dining room for easy access during dinners, but kept under lock and key by the butler. Those on a par with Mr. Carson would even sleep in this space to keep an extra-close eye on the valuables.
Today, butler's pantries may still be found in houses and apartments even in the absence of servants. The storage space of yesteryear remains a feature, but the modern butler's pantry often includes a sink, small dishwasher, mini-fridge, and/or wine fridge. This is a popular feature among those who like to entertain, as it allows homeowners to keep their fanciest dinnerware separate from everyday dishes, do food prep when the kitchen is crowded, or stow dirty dishes out of sight until the party's over. However, even residents who don't throw regular dinner parties can enjoy a butler's pantry - The Spruce suggests turning it into a dedicated snack cabinet, wine "cellar," or tricked-out coffee bar.
Just as the term "butler's pantry" harkens back to grand manor houses of old, they are indeed often found in prewar apartments where a full staff of servants was on hand. However, some designers have been incorporating it into new developments. We take a look at listings throughout New York with butler's pantries in the homes.
