From April 10-12, 2026, the 2026 U.S. Masters Squash Championships will take place in New York City. This variation on tennis dates back to the 19th century, when it was invented at British boarding school Harrow. In the present day, governing body World Squash has a membership of 115 National Squash Federations, and squash is one of five new sports that will debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
As opposed to racquet sports like tennis and pickleball, squash is played on a four-walled court, which makes it easier and more pleasant to stick with all year round. However, the downside to this is that it makes pick-up games in makeshift settings difficult. Squash enthusiasts set up an outdoor court on the Lower East Side in Hamilton Fish Park in spring 2018, but it was demolished in 2022 after years of vandalism and poor maintenance.

There are a number of dedicated squash clubs throughout New York where people can get instruction and book a court, not to mention squash courts at gyms and private clubs; such locations will serve as venues for the U.S. Masters Squash Championships. However, a growing number of residential buildings throughout the city offer squash courts in their amenity packages.
