As of this writing, the US Open is in full swing and proving an exciting time for tennis fans. Whether Francis Tiafoe or Taylor Fritz wins their semifinal match tomorrow, an American man will make it to the finals for the first time since 2006; the winner will face top-seeded Italian Jannik Sinner or Brit Jack Draper. In a major upset on the women's side, American Jessica Pegula defeated top-seeded Iga Swiatek to advance to the semi-finals, where she will face Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.
The tournament comes in the wake of the success of the film Challengers earlier this spring, and at a time when there is no shortage of places to watch, whether indoors or out, in the city. But some are inspired to go one step further and pick up a racquet again. This isn’t as easy as it sounds: Court space in public parks is limited to begin with, and tennis players now find themselves in competition with pickleball players for it.

The battle for court space is especially contentious because they will only have access to it for a limited time. Tennis season only lasts from the first Saturday in April to the Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 25 this year, owing to Thanksgiving's late date). Tennis clubs and gyms with courts are certainly an option, but the fees can quickly add up to more than the $100 a full-season tennis permit costs. But for residents of the following buildings, a tennis court is just an elevator ride away.
