After weeks of cold weather, New Yorkers are almost certainly ready for summer. The smell of chlorine can evoke that time of year for many, given its use sanitizing public pools, but a new, gentler alternative is growing in popularity among swimmers and pool operators alike. Chlorine is still present in saltwater pools, but a generator is used to produce just enough chlorine to disinfect the water. These lower levels are gentler on the skin, hair, and eyes than traditional chlorine tablets and sticks, not to mention there's no risk of fading swimwear. Such benefits have made saltwater pools more appealing to swimmers, and pool owners and operators appreciate not having to store hazardous chemicals as they would with chlorine.
New York City's outdoor public pools are still sanitized with chlorine, but saltwater pools may be found at indoor locations throughout the city. Select Equinox gyms have changed their pools from chlorine to saltwater, and Chelsea Piers' flagship location spent the last half of 2024 on a pool renovation project that included switching to saltwater. Some luxury hotels offer saltwater pools among their amenities and it may be possible to buy day passes to make the most of them.
