Archstone Chelsea - 800 Sixth Avenue: CARTER'S REVIEW

This 36-story rental apartment building at 800 Avenue of the Americas was originally known as the Aston and is now called Archstone Chelsea.

It has 266 apartments and many curved bay windows and corner windows in the tower that rises above a five-story base.

It is one of several high-rise apartment buildings that have radically transformed the city’s former "Flower District" that played host to wholesale florists for decades in the area just to the north of the Ladies’ Mile Historic District.

The building has a garage, a fitness center, and a sundeck and apartments have bamboo plank flooring and some have 16-foot-high ceilings.

The building also has an outdoor boccie court and patio and valet service.

Kitchens have two-tone maple cabinetry, and granite countertops.

It was developed in 2004 by Matthew G. Adell, who with his father, Leonard Adell, waged a long campaign to have the Flower District rezoned for residential uses. According to an article by Edwin McDowell in the October 31, 2003 edition of The New York Times, Leonard Adell began assembling three sites in the "corridor" in the 1970s and with the Witkoff Group built the Capitol at Chelsea, a rental apartment building, in 2001. It also bought the land wee the Chelsea Tower stands and sold it as well as this building. This building was sold in 2004 for about $195 million.

Costas Kondylis & Partners designed this and the Capitol at Chelsea.

Initial rents for studios were about $1,995, $2,595 for one-bedroom unitts, $3,195 for lofts, and $4,595 for two-bedroom apartments.

The rezoning of the district covered the area on the avenue from 24th to 31st Street.
