Overview of 601 West End Avenue

Built in 1915 by the renowned developer Bing & Bing and designed by legendary architect Emery Roth, 601 West End Avenue stands as one of the Upper West Side's most distinguished limestone clad apartment buildings. Roth, who would later design masterpieces like the San Remo and Beresford, created an elegant 13 story structure that exhibits an eclectic mixture of neo classicism and Vienna Secession style. The building originally featured just one apartment per floor and was converted to a co-op in 1978, now housing 26 apartments total.

The building has notable entertainment industry connections, having been home to Jesse L. Lasky, the theatrical and burlesque producer who co-founded what became Paramount Pictures. Lasky partnered with his brother in law Samuel Goldfish (later Goldwyn), Cecil B. DeMille, and Adolph Zukor to form Lasky Famous Players, which eventually evolved into the major Hollywood studio system and Metro Goldwyn Mayer.

The intimate building maintains only two apartments per floor, ensuring excellent privacy and spacious layouts. Most units feature soaring 10 foot beamed ceilings, oversized prewar windows, hardwood floors, and abundant natural light from multiple exposures. Corner apartments are particularly desirable, offering three to four exposures and expansive proportions. Many units have been renovated with modern kitchens, updated bathrooms, in unit washer dryers, and central air conditioning while preserving original architectural details.

Located just one block from Riverside Park and close to Broadway shopping and dining, the building offers a keyed elevator, video security system, live in superintendent, bicycle storage, and locked package room. The building maintains a strict no dogs policy but allows cats. With convenient access to the 86th Street subway station and crosstown bus service, this limestone façade building with its distinctive wrought iron entrance marquee represents one of the most sought after addresses on the Upper West Side.

Price/Room (Est)

Why are we displaying the estimated price per room?

For some co-ops, instead of price per square foot, we use an estimate of the number of rooms for each sold apartment to chart price changes over time. This is because many co-op listings do not include square footage information, and this makes it challenging to calculate accurate square-foot averages.

By displaying the price per estimated room count, we are able to provide a more reliable and consistent metric for comparing sales in the building. While we hope that this gives you a clearer sense of price trends in the building, all data should be independently verified. All data provided are only estimates and should not be used to make any purchase or sale decision.
