January is typically a gloomy time of year in New York City. The holiday decorations have come down, it’s still getting dark earlier than many would prefer, and the weather is cold throughout the day. The city has traditionally held events like Restaurant Week and Broadway Week to lure people out and cheer them up, but that’s a little more complicated this year. Some of the shows that were initially part of the Broadway Week promotion (Girl from the North Country and To Kill a Mockingbird) went temporarily dark in response to Omicron. Additionally, even the prospect of a deal on dinner at a high-end restaurant isn’t enough to lure some people to an indoor restaurant when coronavirus cases are raging.

At the same time, there is room for optimism. Data shows that infections in New York City are going down, and major developments are moving forward after several quiet years. Construction has commenced at 520 Fifth Avenue, and Extell is in the early stages of a new tower at 570 Fifth Avenue. In a virtual meeting with the Housing and Zoning Committee of Community Board 5, Gary Barnett outlined plans for what he hopes will be a 47-story, 1.5 million-square-foot office tower with outdoor terraces and event space. In response to market uncertainty, he also described an alternate plan for a taller mixed-use building to contain a hotel and residential units. The project also includes a set of transit improvements to the Fifth Avenue/53rd Street subway station that would improve capacity and make the station ADA-compliant.

If all goes according to plan, construction on 570 Fifth Avenue is expected to start in 2023 and take five years. In the meantime, certain lucky New Yorkers can look out on the ever-changing yet timeless city skyline to fill residents with wonder and hope for brighter days ahead. We take a look at listings that face views of the world's most iconic skyline.
