Overview of 985 Fifth Avenue

Ex-Governor Eliot Spitzer's family firm is building a new 20-story high-end condominium building at 985 Fifth Avenue in New York, in place of its existing 53-year-old rental building across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The new building will be a little taller than its predecessor but have fewer apartments, with just 21 condominium units as opposed to 47 rentals. The new structure will likely target the highest end of the market considering it is the only ground-up development on this section of Fifth Avenue.

Studio Sofield with SLCE Architects designed the new, traditionally styled building, which required design approval by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The apartments will include several simplexes and duplexes, and amenities will include a fitness center, an indoor swimming pool, several lounges, a mail/package room, bike storage, and a central laundry room.

Carter’s Review

"This tall, mid-block, rental apartment house has excellent views of Central Park, is close to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a major crosstown street.

Built in 1968, the 26-story, yellow-brick tower has only 46 apartments."
