Manage buildingWaterside Plaza, completed in 1974 by architectural firm Davis, Brody & Associates and developer Richard Ravitch, is a distinctive residential complex built on a platform over the East River between 25th and 30th Streets. The development consists of four slender towers ranging from 31 to 37 stories, containing 1,470 apartments, and is supported by over 2,000 pilings descending 80 feet into the riverbed.
The complex's architectural design features chamfered towers with red-brick masonry and a unique 'pinwheel' plan that provides spectacular river views. The development includes a landscaped plaza, duplex townhouses, and houses the United Nations International School. Its design earned multiple accolades, including The Bard Award for Distinguished Architecture and Urban Design in 1975 and an American Institute of Architects honor award in 1976.
In 2004, Waterside underwent a $35 million capital improvement program that included apartment renovations, hallway upgrades, plaza waterproofing, and enhanced landscaping. The complex offers numerous amenities including doorman service, a fitness center, swimming pool, storage units, and a private shuttle service for residents to various Manhattan locations.
The development is known for its active community programming, hosting year-round events including outdoor summer concerts, Monday night movies, and various festivals. While the complex's location offers stunning waterfront views and access, it maintains a unique position in Manhattan's landscape, connected to the city via the FDR Drive and a pedestrian bridge at East 25th Street.
