This 12-story, gray-brick apartment building at 1100 Madison Avenue occupies the entire west blockfront the Avenue between 82nd and 83rd Streets.

It is known as the Schermerhorn and was designed in 1911 by Schwartz & Gross for the Princeton Construction Company that had bought it from the Schermerhorn family, one of the oldest prominent families in New York State that also sold the block across the avenue the same year to Allenel Construction Company, composed of A. L. Mordecai & Son and Hellner & Wolf.

It has 100 rental apartments, a canopied entrance flanked by gray polished granite square columns.

The building, which has a concierge, has a two-story rusticated limestone base and several bandcourses. It is highlighted by a center two-story roof element on its avenue frontage and by the division of its long frontage on the avenue with five quoins.

The building is diagonally across the avenue from the low-rise PS 6, one of the highest rated public schools in New York.

The building, which is also known as 21 East 82nd Street and 30 East 83rd Street, has stores on its ground floor including a very famous pastry store.

The building is one block east of the main entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue in Central Park.

There is cross-town bus service at 79th and 86th Streets.
