"This 12-story, gray-brick apartment building at 1100 Madison Avenue occupies the entire west blockfront the Avenue between 82nd and 83rd Streets.

It is known as Gerel and was designed in 1911 by Schwartz & Gross for the Princeton Construction Company that had bought it from the Schermerhorn family, one of the oldest prominent families in New York State that also sold the block across the avenue the same year to Allenel Construction Company, composed of A.
