New York City amenities, convenience and culture--plus city initiatives--spell perfection for urban empty nesters and over-55s. NYC condo living for retirees

The focus on young families and single professionals in the city is a familiar one. But retirees and boomers are realizing that living in one of New York City's luxury condo buildings may be the perfect lifestyle choice.

They're able to take advantage of building amenities like at-your-service doormen, on-site fitness centers, concierge services and spas, as well as conveniences like having someone on-site to fix leaky faucets. And of course, there's all that city culture when they step out of their buildings.

New York City--the first city in the world to join the World Health Organization's Global Network of Age-friendly Cities--has adopted an impressive list of new initiatives addressing issues for older residents like pedestrian safety, mobility, and access to cultural activities. (For example, at busy street crossings the city has installed countdown clocks and lengthened the time given to cross the street.)
