The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved today the addition of four floors to the old two-story market building across from the High Line in Chelsea at 837 Washington Street.

Taconic Investment Partners is the developer and Morris Adjmi is the architect.

The commission had not approved two previous designs for the project. The first one was 100 feet high. The approved design is 76 feet high and has wider bays in the base.

The design is highlighted by large diagonal columns that sun through the building from top to bottom, "giving an added jolt of energy to the site," according to an article today at ny.curbed.com.

"The awnings above both Washington and West 13th Streets will be refurbished, and old meat racks, where sides of beef used to swing above the sidewalks, will be restored," the article continued.
