The plans of The Related Cos. for the Hudson Yards include an 1-million-square-foot office building on the southeast corner of the 26-acre rail yards that could open by 2015 and subsequently be joined by a low-rise retail mall, shown at the left, to another major office building that would, like the rest of the project, be erected on a deck over the train tracks, according to an article today by Matt Chaban at observer.com.

The article, which included about a dozen new renderings, indicated that a tall and rounded hotel tower designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox is also planned as well as a maze designed by landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh.

The overall design for the 26-acre development that will also include several thousand apartments and a few million square feet of office space and a school and a cultural center has changed "considerably since Related won the right to develop the Yards after Tishman Speyer bowed out in 2008," the article said.

The article showed skyline renderings that indicated that one office building will be considerably taller than previously shown.

One of the renderings indicated that the nearby subway station for the extension of the 7 line from Times Square will be a large skylit dome.

Last week, Related announced it was preparing to demolish the Metals Construction Building, on the southeast corner of the 26-acre rail yards.

"The Hudson Yards represents the future of New York and the commencement of this preparatory work marks an important milestone in its development," Ross said in a release.

Van Valkenburgh is also designing the adjacent Hudson Boulevard, a 4-acre string of parks running from 34th Street to 42nd Street.
