210 Riverside Drive CLOSE
This robust 12-story building was erected in 1909 and converted to a cooperative in 1987. It has 88 apartments.
It has a very decorative top whose rustication matches that of the corner quoins and large cartouches above the 10th floor. It was designed by Schwartz & Gross, one of the most prolific architectural firms of pre-war apartment buildings in the city and originally it has a large projeced sheet metal cornice that was removed in the last half of the 20th Century.
It has surviving ornate terra cottta spandrels and the building lies within the Riverside West End Historic District.
The building also has a fine wrought-iron vestibule and a limestone and granite base.
According to Peter Salwen, the author of "Upper West Side Story," Marcus Loew, the movie producer, once lived in this building, which has protruding air-conditioners.
The building is not far from the southern entrance to the 96th Street express subway station.
