between Amsterdam Avenue & West End Avenue View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 235 West 71st Street by Carter Horsley

This very handsome, red-brick, mid-block building at 235 West 71st Street between Broadway and West End Avenue was converted to a condominium in 2008 by 235 West 71st Street LLC., of which James Rinzler was a principal.

The building was erected in 1912 and has 33 apartments.

It was designed by Gaetan Ajello, who designed many elegant apartment buildings on the Upper West Side, and Mario Arbore of Arbore Design was the architect for the conversion.

Bottom Line

An elegant, pre-war, mid-block location in a prime and central Upper West Side location.

Description

The building has a two-story limestone base and quoins both at its sides and around the center windows on the 5th to 7th floors that are set on a white-stone base.

The building has a thin bandcourse above its eighth floor and a medium-sized cornice.

Amenities

The building has a 24-hour doorman, tilt-and-turn windows, eat-in, windowed kitchens, a gym, a children’s playroom, a bicycle room and storage bins.

Apartments

Some apartments have fireplaces and some have terraces or gardens and all have new tilt-and-turn windows and new solid oak herringbone and strip floors and individual multi-zoned heating and air-conditioning.

Eat-in Neff kitchens have Viking and Miele appliances and baths have double vanities.

Apartment 5C is a three-bedroom unit that has a 10-foot-long entry foyer that leads to a 15-foot-living room adjacent to an open 15-foot-long dining room and a 17-foot-eat-in, windowed kitchen.

Apartment 8A has a 20-foot-long entrance gallery that leads to a 9-foot-long foyer that open on a 16-foot-long living room and 16-foot-long dining room next to the 14-foot-long kitchen with an angled island and a 14-foot-long breakfast area. There are four bedrooms and a 16-foot-long library.

The third floor apartment is similar to Apartment 8A but has a family room and a total of 7 bedrooms.
