Review of 1487 Broadway by Carter Horsley

This 5-story apartment building at 1487 Broadway on the corner of Cornelia Street in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn almost looks like a transplanted architectural delicacy from New Orleans with its frilly balconies and railings and its impressive architectural notations that are too neat to be graffiti scrawl.

It is an expansion and redevelopment of a two-story building by Cando Capital of which David  Sinay is a principal.

S&S Architectural Design LLC of which Shawn Stiles is a principal designed the building.

It has 17 rental apartments, 3,000 square feet of retail space and 377 square feet of health care facility space.

It is close to the Halsey Street elevated station of the J subway line and the short façade of the building is adjacent to the elevated line.

Bottom Line

If its frilly balconies and railings and architectural “notations” don’t attract attention on this “white” low-rise building in Bushwick, then its “spilt” black ink at the corner surely will.

Description

Many of its windows are tall and multi-paned in a Gothic style.  The fenestration is a mix of sizes and groupings.

The balconies have intricate railings and the building’s roofline has a very attractive geometric design on its railing.

The building makes extensive use of black domed lights on the ground floor, above the balconies and on the roof deck.  It also has some wall decorated with large architectural drawings and floorplans.

The ground floor, which is painted black except for the windows, has attractive white painted outlines of architecture columns.

Some apartments have diagonal floor sections in front of the open kitchens.

The top floor on the building’s long façade has its address printed with large letters.

Amenities

The building has a roof deck, a laundry, a video intercom, central air-conditioning and some balconies.
