This very handsome, 12-story building at 40 West 17th Street was erected in 1910 and contains 21 co-operative apartments.

The building is in the middle of the block between Fifth Avenue and the Avenue of the Americas in Chelsea.

Bottom Line

A very attractive loft apartment building in Chelsea close to Union Square and Madison Square parks and many restaurants.

The building has a two-story, rusticated limestone base with a very broad center arched set of windows in the center of the second floor.

There is a string course above the second floor and a bandcourse above the third floor with decorative elements between the windows on the third floor.

The ninth floor has arched windows at its corners and five windows beneath a broad arch in the center.

The tenth floor is bracketed between a stringcourse and bandcourse and the 12th floor ha some arched windows and decorative elements between the tops of the windows under a cornice.
