Overview of Altair 18 at 32 West 18th Street

Altair 18 is a 12 story pre-war condominium at 32 West 18th Street, occupying a 1908 commercial building converted into 22 residences in 2006. Maynicke & Frank designed the original structure, while Extell Development led the residential conversion with architect Cetra/Ruddy.

The façade combines a three story rusticated limestone base, beige brick upper stories and a substantial cornice. Most residential floors contain two lofts, generally measuring approximately 3,000 to 3,300 square feet. Ceilings commonly rise above 10 feet, and many layouts use long entrance galleries or foyers to separate broad living and dining spaces from bedroom wings. Oversized windows, fireplaces, radiant heated floors and in-unit laundry recur in the apartments.

The building has a 24 hour doorman and concierge, resident storage and a fitness center designed by La Palestra. Its landscaped rooftop terrace has cabanas, a communal grill and views extending from the Empire State Building toward Hudson Yards. The lobby is finished with laurel wood walls and ceilings, and pets are permitted.

The mid-block address is between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, on the Chelsea side of the Flatiron area. Union Square is one block south, Madison Square Park begins five blocks north, and the surrounding streets form part of the Ladies' Mile retail district.
