Chelsea Beacon is the redevelopment of 550 West 20th Street, the former Bayview Correctional Facility, into a mixed-use project with 131 new housing units and community facility space dedicated to youth-oriented programming. The housing units will be affordable to households earning up to 80 percent of the Area Median Income, and will include at least 79 supportive housing units. The project will also include a 15-bed Short-Term Transitional Residence Program.
Much of the building's original Art Deco character will be preserved, and a seven-story addition will be clad in brick and set back from the perimeter to avoid casting shadows. It will incorporate modern sustainability and resiliency features, including all-electric building systems. Amenities will include a residential lobby with original, restored nautical mosaic murals, a package room, a library, bike storage, and a ninth-floor terrace.
