Slate is a 12 story, 29 unit condominium at 163 West 18th Street in Chelsea, completed in 2007. Designed by Karl Fischer and developed by the Angel Group, it has a charcoal gray matte terracotta façade with gray tinted glass and silver colored window walls. Fischer used zoning provisions for dormers above the street wall setback to shape an angled volume that continues down the façade and projects roughly two feet at the base, forming bay windows.
Andres Escobar designed the interiors. Many residences have floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies, terraces, or patios, while corner plans bring multiple exposures and city views. In-unit washer/dryers are standard, and a townhouse style triplex places its main living area on the middle floor, with sleeping and flexible space above and below and connected outdoor areas on two levels.
The full service building has a 24 hour doorman, concierge, live-in superintendent, fitness center, resident storage and an on-site parking garage. A landscaped outdoor space and pet spa complement the private terraces, and pets are allowed.
Slate is just west of Seventh Avenue, where the 18th Street station serves the 1 train. The High Line crosses 18th Street near Tenth Avenue, while Chelsea Market occupies the block between Ninth and Tenth avenues at 15th and 16th streets.
