Aperture 538 is a five story, 10 unit condominium at 538 Washington Avenue in Clinton Hill, completed in 2015. Designed by Luca Andrisani, its defining feature is a copper colored corten screen with broad operable shutters, conceived as an abstract reference to Brooklyn’s bridges. The screen projects across the second through fourth floors, above a recessed ground level with sidewalk landscaping.
Developed by Sam Boymelgreen, the building is arranged with two residences per floor. Open plans, oversized windows and windowed home offices recur in the apartments, while private outdoor space ranges from balconies and terraces to gardens and roof decks. Several homes have three exposures, and a garden duplex occupies more than 2,200 interior square feet with roughly 700 square feet outside.
The building has a landscaped common roof deck, virtual doorman with package reception, mail room, bicycle room and resident storage. Kitchens generally use islands and integrated appliances, while white oak floors, recessed lighting, generous closets and washer and dryer provisions recur in the interiors.
Aperture 538 is on Washington Avenue between Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue, amid Clinton Hill’s brownstone blocks. The Clinton Washington Avenues station for the C train is at Fulton Street and Washington Avenue, and Pratt Institute, Fort Greene Park and the restaurants along Fulton Street and Vanderbilt Avenue are also in the surrounding area.
