Clermont Armory Towers is a six story, 110 unit rental at 171 Clermont Avenue in Clinton Hill, converted from an armory completed in 1873 for the 23rd Regiment of the National Guard. William R. Mundell designed the original French Second Empire building, whose 130 by 180 foot drill hall was then the largest unobstructed hall in the United States.
A 1911 reconstruction by Floyd Peterson gave the Clermont Avenue frontage its medieval revival appearance while retaining the original sandstone base and drill hall. For the 2000 residential conversion, Robert M. Scarano Jr. placed two wings behind the old façade around an elevated landscaped courtyard, preserving three curved wrought iron trusses from the drill hall. Ten apartments along Clermont Avenue have balconies facing an atrium behind the façade.
Many apartments have generous layouts, hardwood floors, large windows and walk-in closets, with corner exposures and courtyard views represented among the floor plans. Heat, hot water and cooking gas are included, and the building is pet friendly.
The building has a 24 hour doorman and concierge, central air conditioning, a health club, laundry room, bike storage, video intercom, live-in superintendent and full service garage. The communal courtyard is landscaped, and Fort Greene Park is several blocks away. The conversion was financed through the New York City Housing Development Corporation’s New Housing Opportunities program, which was created for middle income households.
