Riverton Square is a seven building rental complex spread across 12 landscaped acres in East Harlem, between 135th and 138th streets and extending from Fifth Avenue toward the Harlem River. Its 13 story red brick buildings contain 1,230 apartments. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company built the complex in 1947, the same year it completed Stuyvesant Town, but Riverton's rental policy did not bar Black and Hispanic tenants.
The gated grounds contain gardens, a children's playroom and outdoor playground, a basketball court, and a private community center. Laundry facilities are located in each building, while the complex also has 24 hour security, a management office, and live-in superintendents.
Typical floors are arranged with eight apartments. Layouts generally favor broad living rooms, large bedrooms, windowed kitchens, and substantial closet space; windowed bathrooms also recur in renovated homes. River, treetop, and garden exposures are common, particularly from upper floors and apartments facing the interior grounds.
Heat, water, and cooking gas are included in the rent. The 2 and 3 trains stop at the 135th Street station on Lenox Avenue, about a block west of the complex, while Harlem River Drive runs along its eastern edge.
