Carter Horsley's Building Review Carter Horsley
Jan 18, 2013

Carter's Review

172 East 4th Street in the East Village was erected in 1929 by Samuel Ageloff along with a similar beige-brick, 12-story building at 141 East Third Street.

Both buildings were designed by Shampan & Shampan, who were best known for some commercial buildings in the Garment Center including the 17-story Shampan Building at 252 West 37th Street that was built in 1924.

Bottom Line

One of the few big and highly visible pre-war apartment buildings in the East Village, the development was long regarded as one of the premier addresses in the neighborhood.

Description

The buildings have canopied entrances beneath terracotta friezes of leashed lionesses pulling Near Eastern men.

They stand out in the East Village neighborhood for their scale and their "uptown" detailing.

The two buildings are not perfectly aligned but are very similar with somewhat crenellated rooflines and two bandcourses.
