97 Fifth Avenue is a former late 19th century office building converted to rental apartments, designed by Robert Maynicke in 1898. Owned by the J. & R. Kalimian Trust, the eight story building contains 28 apartments and retains a three story rusticated limestone base.
The building’s most distinctive architectural feature is its 12 foot ceiling height, paired with oversized windows and decorative spiraled mullions. In 2005, the windows were replaced with thermopane glass and aluminum frames while preserving those mullions, maintaining the façade’s original character.
Apartments include one and two bedroom layouts with spacious living areas, hardwood floors, oversized windows, and 12 foot ceilings. Renovated kitchens and bathrooms, air conditioning, large closets, and open kitchen arrangements recur among the residences. The building has a laundry room and a live-in superintendent; pets are not permitted.
Three blocks north of 14th Street, 97 Fifth Avenue sits between Union Square and Madison Square Park, with Union Square Park about one block away.
