84 University Place is a seven-story Romanesque Revival–style loft building, designed by architect Louis Korn in 1894, who is renowned for his work on several landmarked NYC buildings. Over the years, this historic structure has been home to notable tenants, including graphic designer and artist Stanley Glaubach, as well as Charles Cheriff Galleries, which occupied the building for nearly a century.
The building was sold for $11.3 million in 2024, a significant increase from the $500,000 the Wachman family paid for it in 1981, reflecting the changing dynamics of the neighborhood. Charles Cheriff Galleries, known for its French furniture and involvement in period dramas like HBO’s The Gilded Age, relocated to Long Island City, adapting to evolving tastes and the encroachment of luxury condos, trendy restaurants, and upscale boutiques in the area.
